The gravity survey shows variations which indicate the possibilities of a considerable depth of sediment under western Bathurst Island. Nothing is known of Pre-Cretaceous sediments on the islands. The area was selected by reason of its situation opposite the possible oil bearing island arc chain in a position comparable with that of Saudi Arabia in relation to Persian Gulf Oilfields.en_US
