Abstract: Austral Geo Prospectors Pty Ltd conducted the 1966 Simpson Desert 'A' Seismic Survey on behalf of Amerada Petroleum Corporation Ltd as part of the farm-out agreement with the title holders of OP57, Beach Petroleum NL. The survey utilised continuous coverage reflection seismic methods and included both reconnaissance and semi-detail work. The survey acquired 20 new seismic lines a total of 1606.8km.
The main objectives of this survey were to extend the existing seismic control into the eastern and northwestern parts of OP57 for the purpose of determining whether these areas can be adequately explored by seismic methods, and to map the regional structure and investigate the thickness and attitude of the sedimentary sections present in this area.
Two horizons were mapped throughout most of the area, horizon 'C', Jurassic, De Souza Sandstone and horizon 'P' approximate Permian. Insufficient information has been obtained for pre-Permian sediments.
