Abstract: | Teck Australia Pty Ltd (Teck) successfully completed an AMT survey over the Carrara Project with the aim of understanding the sub-surface stratigraphy and structure in the prospective Carrara area. The survey was completed between 9th August 2015 and 5th September 2015 The Carrara region is interpreted as containing prospective rocks of the Paleoproterozoic McNamara (QLD)/McArthur (NT) group, overlain by Mesoproterozoic rocks (South Nicholson), stretching toward the Lawn Hill Platform, capped by younger Georgina Basin 'cover' increasing in depth to the west of the project. The major basin controlling structure in the area is interpreted as Little Range Fault, which provide an overall E-W orientation to the McNamara stratigraphy. Despite the occurrence of the Century Zn-Pb deposit and other Zn-Pb occurrences hosted in the equivalents of the McNamara, the Carrara region has not been effectively explored for sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) Zn-Pb mineralisation. The development of a robust structural framework and understanding of 2nd order to 4th order sub-basin development is critical for effective exploration targeting of SHMS. The early stage acquisition of AMT data at Carrara was considered a cost effective critical step in target generation in such a large region where prospective rocks are obscured by Mesoproterozoic and Georgina Basin. The broad scale data acquisition across the region will allow for subsequent focused exploration through determining depth of target lithologies and defining the extensional and post extensional architecture of the region and unveiling 3rd/4th order sub basin geometry. |
