Abstract: In 1979, one verticle stratigraphic hole, GCRD 1, was drilled 500 metres south of Witchetty Bore to a depth of 219.15 metres. The hole intersected a highly fractured quartz sandstone which was tentatively assigned to the Adelaidean Vaughan Springs Quartzite. In 1980, three geophysical lines, 2 km long and 500 m apart, were surveyed west of GCRD 1 and the Wallaby Bore - Witchetty Bore track. Microgravity and total field magnetic measurements were taken at 100 m intervals along these lines. The results indicated that Mount Eclipse Sandstone was probably present at depth, in a small area near the southern margin of the licence area. Hole GCRD 2, drilled to test this hypothesis intersected uranium mineralization in a red and white mottled arkose. Two follow-up holes, GCRD 3 and GCRD 4 intersected mineralization 60 m along strike and 30 m down-dip respectively of GCRD 2. The prospect was named 'Malawiri'. Drilling continued in 1981 when a further 2 rotary holes and 12 precollared diamond drill holes, (GCRH 5 to GCRD 19) totalling 3,151.8 metres, were completed at the Malawiri Prospect. The principal object of the drilling was to test for extensions of the mineralization along strike. The first two holes were drilled on existing sections whilst the remaining holes were drilled on four new ones at 60 m intervals along strike. Strong mineralization was found immediately west of the known mineralization but holes on subsequent sections were effectively barren.
