Abstract: Kennecott entered the JV to explore the dolomitic bituminous shale sequence of the Barney Ck Fm. Drilling by Kennecott in the Caranbirini area showed an unexpected thickening of the cover sequence, rendering any deposit too deep to be economic. Kennecott deepened 2 Amoco holes at Glyde River, and drilled another 2 holes to test a sub-basin along the Emu Fault. The target stratigraphic horizon was intersected but with negligible base metal results. The potential for Pb-Zn mineralisation is considered low after this exploration, and it is recommended that no further drilling be done, and that the JV be terminated.
