Abstract: Colour aerial photographs covering the whole area were purchased. Photogeological observations were made after a literature study had indicated that the Harts Range region consists of Proterozoic metasediments and metavolcanics, which have been intruded by pegmatites, quartz reefs, veins and mafic dykes. In much of the EL recent alluvium covers the older metamorphic rocks. Gemstones appear to occur in the older rocks where suitable structural and geochemical conditions prevail. They are also to be found in the soil as a result of weathering of bedrock and in addition, occur as concentrations in creekbeds after erosion and transportation have taken place.
