Abstract: Two costeans (Trenches FT-H12, 13) were cut using a Kato 1220 excavator into the bedrock across old hard-rock mine pits to expose more clearly the nature of the mineralisation. A wall of each trench was mapped in detail and chip-sampled in 1 metre and 2 metre intervals. Samples were assayed for gold and arsenic.
Trench FT-H12 exposed south-dipping siltstone and minor metachert along with blocks of massive white quartz. A one- metre interval returned a gold assay of 2.77 g/t. Arsenic results were generally less then 50ppm. Trench FT-H13 also exposed south dipping (-82) siltstone and massive quartz but no significant assay results ensued. Subsequently a percussion drill hole (reverse circulation, FH-PDH/l9) was sunk to a depth of 50m alongside Trench FT-H12. Samples were taken at one-metre intervals and analysed for gold and arsenic. Although quartz-rich zones were intersected between 3-20m all assay results were negative. The trenching and drilling were parts of more extensive programmes at Fountain Head.
