Abstract: Reconnaissance heavy mineral stream sediment surveys carried out by both BHP Minerals Limited and Stockdale Prospecting Limited identified two anomalous drainages within the licence area. Detailed sampling of the Katherine River and its tributaries recovered moderate to high interest chromite and diamond solely from the bed of the Katherine River. Since none of the tributaries appear to be feeding the moderate to high interest chromite into the Katherine the source of the chromite is believed to lie higher in the catchment of the river. Twelve diamonds totalling 0.72 carats were recovered from a bulk sample collected from the Katherine River. No diamonds were produced by sampling of tributaries of the river and the source of the diamonds is also believed to lie higher in the catchment. Chromite recovered from Grace/Eva Creek is visually of low interest and is distinct from the chromite population found in the Katherine River.
