Title: Final report AtP 2245, Melville Island
Title Holder / Company: Swiss Aluminium Australia
Report id: CR1970-0072
Tenure: AP2245
Year: 1970
Abstract: A search for bauxite was undertaken to follow up an occurrence mentioned by Daily in 1955. 155 man days were spent on the project. Other previous work in the area had focused on phosphate and beach sand occurrences. Only the area between Radford Point and Letheridge Bay was sampled in detail for bauxite, as other areas were found to be barren. 18 pits were dug in addition to surface samples. No bauxite worthy of further work was identified. Minor previously documented beach sand deposits were not rechecked and no additional occurrences encountered on AP 2245. Recent phosphate reconnaissance of the Melville Island/Bathurst Island area returned little of interest. The AP was relinquished.
