Abstract: The initial programme was planned to include geological mapping plus geochemical and geophysical surveys over the entire area of the EL. This programme from the outset was plagued by unforeseen circumstances; firstly, by wet season conditions in the Gulf Country which prevailed well into April 1974, and after a short drying out period were followed by heavy unseasonable rains which fell in the first half of June, again preventing ground movement; and, secondly, by a private agreement between the owner of Benmara Station and the previous holder of an Authority to Prospect over this area, which gave the latter, the sole right to sample bores and generally prospect in the area for a further three years. The assistance of the Director of Mines had to be sought and obtained before our sole right to prospect the area could be established with the station owner. Work finally got underway at the beginning of August and then early in November further problems arose caused by the very early onset of the 1973/74 wet season which proved to be the heaviest and longest wet season ever recorded in the Gulf Country, turning the whole area into an inland sea. However, ground and scintillometer prospecting was carried out and a geological map of the area was produced and is attached.
