Rock property dataset of the Northern Territory

Abstract

Digital Information Package 013 (DIP 013) is a compilation of petrophysical sampling data managed by the Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS). The rock property measurements in this dataset are sourced from open file company reports, core sampling reports, government publications, academic publications and new measurements made on drill core. The new measurements include those that the NTGS systematically measures in conjunction with the HyLogger- hyperspectral scanning of drill core.

Where rock property data has been compiled from published reports, DIP 013 references published sources and provides any available information on measurement methodology. Data compiled from published reports is provided as published and the quality of the data is variable or sometimes unknown. The inclusion of methodology allows the user to assess whether data is fit for the planned purpose, and whether the dataset structure can be used to restrict measurements to those that meet reliability requirements and are representative of the units being investigated. The data is supplied in an Excel worksheet and an attributed GIS table.

In this release petrophysical data for over 25 diamond drillholes were added. In 2023 NTGS started collecting propagation velocity of compressional longitudinal wave (Vp) using a handheld instrument (Surfer UK1401- Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester.) The Vp is measured by timing an ultrasonic pulse over 15 cm of unbroken rock.
