Abstract

In May of 1988 Adelaide Petroleum NL, as operator of the Adelaide-Sabminco NL Joint Venture, were advised by Aboriginal Sacred Sites Authority that exploration of the tenement would constitute a breach of the Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act. The site has been since registered under the Act. Due to restrictions on exploration imposed by the Aboriginal Sacred Sites Authority, the Joint Ventures have been precluded from exploration on the tenement during the year. During the year the Northern Territory Government passed the Northern Territory Aboriginal Sacred Sites Act 1989, which imposed a new authority to protect sacred sites in the Territory, and repealed the-preview Act being the Aboriginal Sacred Sites Authority with a view to gaining access to enable it to carry out its exploration program.
