dc.description.abstract | Exploration within EL 1156 at Howley in the Northern Territory was carried out by Dampier Mining Company Limited in 1977 and 1978 under an agreement between Homestake Australia Ltd and Dampier Mining Company Limited. Field work included gridding, geological mapping, rock chip and alluvial sampling, ground magnetics, diamond and percussion drilling and trenching. Gold occurs in quartz-sulphide veins within the Lower Proterozoic Gerowie Tuff in the hinge zone of the Howley Anticline. The high grade material in the oxidised zone was mined at many locations during the 1890's. Thirteen cored holes and nineteen reverse circulation percussion holes intersected numerous thin reefs. Three reverse circulation holes drilled into magnetic anomalies failed to find mineralisation. Seventeen shallow reverse circulation holes and sixty three excavator slots proved the presence of large quantities of very low grade auriferous wash. Mineral claims covering the main areas explored were pegged in 1979. | en_US |
