Final report for EL 25151 Mulga Part for the period 25 September 2009 to 25 September 2010

Abstract

EL 25151 was explored by Imperial Granite and Minerals Pty Ltd for viridine: a semi-precious gemstone. Evaluation of surface material at the Kelly Hills site, where government geologists first identified viridine in schist, determined that the site is very rich. However, no gem-quality material was recovered at surface due to intense weathering. A small hand-held diamond drill managed to penetrate ~1 m into the viridine-bearing schist, but only revealed that most of the viridine is still weathered. Moreover, microscopic analysis showed the viridine to be heavily included with other minerals (primary inclusions), although there were patches with few or no inclusions. It was hoped that these clear patches may be large enough to produce viable stones. However, discussions with professional gemmologists suggest that the viridine is low quality and has no real value. It was decided not to pursue the project further.
