Monthly report on AP 2676, 8 June 1970 to 8 July 1970

Abstract

Monthly report nnumber 1; 08/06/1971 to 08/07/1971 - Prospecting was largely confined to; a) A broad area reconnaissance by motor vehicle, b) Minor trenching and costeaning in areas of known garnet occurrence. In addition, specimens have been collected for assessment. Thirteen pieces of garnet have been sent to Germany for cuttings. Contact has been made with three abraisives firms, 1. Mitchell's Abrasives Pty Ltd, of Victoria, to whom a parcel of garnet is to be forwarded for assessment. This company imports garnet from the USA, 2. Norton Australia Pty Ltd, of NSW to whom a sample is to be forwarded for assessment. This firm imports 30-40 tons of garbet grain per year from the USA, 3. Australian Abrasives Pty Ltd, of NSW, who do not use garnet. Preliminary search showed no gossans other than large area of weathered porcellanite. Sections of pegmatite received preliminary investigation. Ongeva Creek itself does not appear to contain concentrations of garnet grains at depth, as we hoped. Although garnet has a high specific gravity, the grains seem to be scattered randomly throughout the sands of the creek, even at eight feet below the surface. The Irinda Gneiss is largely covered by Quaternary Sediments in the area covered, being exposed in the South of the area held. Cash expenditure has been low, but over 1,000 vehicle miles were travelled solely for exploration of the prospect.
