The report covers exploration work in 1977 field season for the South Alligator Joint Venture by Noranda Australia Limited as operators. It is confined to the Scinto Plateau and Coronation Hill areas. At Scinto Plateau, most work was confined to eleven granted tenements covering the south west and north west portions of the Plateau, and a further eight lease applications. Geological mapping, gamma and alpha radiation and soil geochemical surveys were completed. This was controlled by a 10km closed theodolite traverse around the scree slopes of the plateau. Working traverses were set off from this with compass tape and clinometers in closed loops back to the base line. In addition to Mapping, radiometric surveys, alphalogger (radon) surveys and soil sample geochemical surveys were completed. 15 anomalous zones were selected from the data as possibly related to undiscovered (uranium) mineralisation. Seven of these were considered high priority and follow up programmes were recommended on all anomalies. At Coronation Hill during 1977, an area covering 1050m x 250m on the northern scree slopes was gridded, mapped, soil sampled, and surveyed for gamma and alpha radiation. The results did not justify recommendation of further work on the gridded area, and 'the prospect of a large scale gold ore body being present in the mapped area was not good, but further surface sampling should be carried out on an informal and non priority basis, around the contact of the porphyry and its inclusions in order to test other areas for possible mineralisation'.en_US
