The Gigantic Exploration Licence, number 4820, on the Tennant Creek (SE 53-14) 1:250,000 sheet was granted to N. Byrne & Associates Pty. Ltd. on November 20, 1985 to cover the area of outcrop around the old Gigantic workings. The E.L. covered an area of thirteen square kilometres (four blocks). The area was considered favourable as it lies within the prospective Carrarnan Formation of the Lower Proterozoic Warramunga Group of sediments, and is a site of known production from an ironstone orebody typical of the Tennant Creek guldfield. On August 1, 1988, the EL became subject to a Joint Venture between Giant'sen_US
Reef Mining Pty Ltd (GRM) and Western Mining Corporation Ltd. (WMC). The Joint Venture also includes twelve other Exploration Licences held by GRM and by N. Byrne and Associates Pty. Ltd. Under the terms of the joint venture, WMC will manage and operate future exploration in the Tennant Creek area, and fieldwork commenced at the end of August, 1988. This is the first annual report prepared by WMC for the Gigantic Area, details of previous work by the joint venture partners arid other companies in the area. In accordance with the provision of the Mining Act 50% of the existing area of the E.L. was relinquished on the third anniversary of granting of the Licence. The two eastern blocks, those containing the old Gigantic workings, were applied for as an Exploration Retention Lease prior to the reduction of E.L. 4820. This report deals with Licence area before reduction but concentrates on the Gigantic Mine Area, which is now within the ERL 85. Exploration work to date has had a twofold objective; Firstly to determine if an orebody exists in or adjacent to any of the Gigantic ironstones; and, secondly to use this known producer as a case study of the style of mineralisation typical for the field.en_US
