Title: 1976 Final report on exploration, EL 71 Finniss River, NT
Title Holder / Company: Broken Hill
Report id: CR1976-0069
Tenure: EL71
Year: 1976
Abstract: No conclusions given, all anomalies found were weak or caused by trace quantities only. EL relinquished. Exploration Licence 71, located 80 kilometres south-west of Darwin, was taken up to test five aeromagnetic anomalies for base metals. At Daly River, 40 kilometres south of EL 71, base metals are associated with distinct aeromagnetic anomalies and it was considered possible that the aeromagnetic anomalies in EL 71 might represent strike extensions of the Daly River mineralization. In 1972 the aeromagnetic anomalies were located on the ground and associated I.P./geochemical anomalies were obtained. In 1973 selected I.P./geochernical/ magnetic targets were drilled. Best analyses are 0.53% Zn and 0.23% Pb over 4 metres. During 1973, because of the similarities between EL 71 and the Alligator River uranium province a combined aeromagnetic/spectrometer survey was flown and several distinct uranium channel anomalies were obtained. In 1974 these anomalies were located on the ground and investigated by spectrometer traversing, soil sampling, and auger drilling. Auger drilling to test for uranium was also carried out over black soil swamp in northern E.L. 71. In 1975, one diamond drill hole D7 was drilled to test Cambrian sediments for phosphate.
