Problems are being encountered in trying to separate beryl from the host material without damaging the beryl. Explosives and jackhammers used in the past by mine workers damaged the gemstones. Only about 50 carats of suitable material has been recovered from the mullock heaps by hand. The quality of the gemstones is good and therefore a more appropriate method of extraction needs to be found.en_US
