Exploration Licence No. 5,862 covers an area of approx. 1,600 square kilometres and lies in the south-western corner of the FINKE 1:250,000 sheet area. About one third of the licence area covers geology of undifferentiated Precambrian rocks, consisting of gneiss, granite and some dolerite dykes, with many amphibolite dykes. The other two-thirds of the licence area are covered largely by mixture of Mesozoic 'Rumbalara Shale' and 'De Souza Sandstone', which form low, flat-topped mesa type hills. Between the hills the area consists of saltbush-covered, very flat alluvium and sand. Most of the licence area is easily accessable, excepting for some of the area of mesa type hills along the southern boundary. Work carried out during the year consisted of four field trips. The first trip was to familiarise myself with the area in relation to topography, which is an important feature in relation to my particular method of exploration for previous opal. A range of rock samples were collected from sections of the area and also samples were collected from the Mintabie Opal Field in South Australia. A whole rock analysis of these samples shows a direct and identical result for both areas. A single grab sample of amphibolite from a dyke near Umbeara Well gave an anomalous gold (Au) value of 0.03 PPM-Au. The second trip was a prospecting and familiarisation effort in mainly the northern part of the EL. The third trip was mainly to assess the access in the southern boundary region. This area is very difficult and can only be traversed on foot. The fourth trip in April 1989, coincided with unseasonal rains in the area and made access off the main Finke dirt road impossible. It had been planned to commence an R.C. auger drilling programme in May, however, due to wet conditions this had to be abandoned. It is now planned to commence drilling in late June, 1989. The plan is to do a minimum of 5,000' (1,500m) of relatively shallow R.C. auger drilling using a Drillmaster rig with a 200m.m. auger bit. This rig will be hired from the Mintabie Opal Field in South Australia. The areas selected for priority drilling have been chosen after commissioning a study involving Russian Soyuz satellite photography, geological and topographical features. The expenditure commitment for 1988-89 was $40,000, however, by cancelling the drilling programme, due to unseasonal weather, the expenditure was reduced by approx. $18,000.en_US
