Abstract: The Mulga Exploration Licence is located on Lake Nash Station in the eastern part of the Northern Territory. The Licence covers the south-eastern part of the Sandover River 1:250 000 Sheet. Exploration Licence 1249 covers an area of flat lying, dolomitic sediments of the Upper Cambrian - Lower Ordovician Ninmaroo Formation. A major part of this area was previously held by Aquitaine Australia Minerals Pty Ltd who unsuccessfully explored several selected areas for lead and zinc mineralization. A major drainage system in the central part of the Licence was covered by both coarse (-10, +80 mesh) and fine (-80 mesh) stream sediment sampling. Rock chip samples were taken of ferruginous material and one soil sampling traverse was made across a major joint in the southern part of the Licence. CONCLUSIONS; 1. Geological and prospecting traverses failed to find any surface lead or zinc mineralization. No gossanous material was found and all ferruginous material sampled was considered to have lateritic associations. Several moderate zinc anomalies from
rock chip samples are due to a lateritic accumulation of base metals by iron oxides. 2. Of the stream sediment samples taken the only anomalous result occurred in a coarse fraction sample and was due to scavenging by iron and manganese oxides. 3. The lack of any signs of surface mineralization and overall geology of the area when considered with the lack of encouraging results from exploration in areas considered to have more potential for mineralization to the south of Exploration Licence 1249 indicate that the chances of finding a viable lead and/or zinc deposit in the area to be very low. 4. The Ninmaroo Formation was deposited under intertidal to supratidal conditions on a broad shelf of an epicontinental sea. No reefal facies were located. RECOMMENDATIONS; It is recommended that Exploration Licence No.1249 Mulga be relinquished.
