Petrographic characterisation of outcrop samples from the Pine Creek Orogen, Northern Territory

Abstract

Petrographic descriptions and interpretations are reported for 81 rock samples from the Nimbuwah, Central and Litchfield domains of the Pine Creek Orogen (PCO) to help characterise the geological units in the orogen. Thin sections analysed from the Nimbuwah Domain included one sample from each of the Mount Basedow Gneiss, Cahill Formation, and Jim Jim Granite. In the Central Domain, samples included the Mundogie Sandstone (3), Wildman Siltstone (5), Koolpin Formation (5), Gerowie Tuff (16), Mount Bonnie Formation (12), Burrell Creek Formation (29), Chilling Sandstone (3), Tollis Formation (3), and Margaret Granite (1). One sample of the Mount Litchfield Granite of the Litchfield Domain was also analysed.
